AIDA/Web 5.6 released

Dear Smalltalkers,

AIDA/Web Smalltalk web application server version 5.6 was just released, on Squeak and VisualWorks. This version is also a base for forthcoming Aida/Scribo, which will be a CMS (Content Management System), with a core and some plugins: wiki, website, forum, blog.

For those who don't now Aida/Web yet: Aida/Web is a Smalltalk web framework for the component based development of complex web applications. Aida is a mature and proven framework, yet on pair with other modern web frameworks. Aida main characteristics are REST-like, nice and bookmarkable Urls, strong internationalization, seamless integration of Ajax, integrated security with user/group/role management, low memory footprint, ability to serve many web applications and web sites from the same Smalltalk image, reliable serving (with help of Swazoo Smalltalk web server) directly to Internet and more. What's new in 5.6?

  • class SwazooAida for easier start: just doit SwazooAida demoStart
  • run on all interfaces, any host: SwazooAida startOn: somePort, useful for running behind load balancers
  • enhanced reliability and performance serving directly to the Internet
  • multilingual support for serving domain objects in many languages
  • Party/Role framework for modeling complex relationships among different parties (persons, companies). Useful among other for more complex authorization scenarios
  • Joomla template support with Mitra template included
  • upgrade to Prototye 1.6.0, Scriptaculous 1.8.0
  • more understandable reorganization of packages
